Puppy Basics

New puppy? Get your relationship started out on the right paw! Puppies can be a handful and we're here to help. Is your puppy mouthy or puts everything in their mouth? Your puppy will learn how to act appropriately in your home and learn that a door is not an invitation to bolt! In Puppy Class, your precious new addition will learn basic manners while also working on socialization skills. For puppies 8 weeks to 5 months old.

  • To get you and your puppy ready for the real world, we will focus on teaching your puppy important foundation skills such as how to:

    • Prevent counter-surfing and begging at the table

    • Walk nicely on a leash and not drag you all over the block

    • Get your dog to leave an item and teach them to drop something if they already have it

    • Greet people without jumping all over them

    • Come when called

    • Behave around an open door

  • We will help you make sense of socialization and how to read your puppy. Socialization is important for puppies because it sets them up for success as adult dogs, introducing them to sights, sounds, and other life experiences at a key time when your pup's personality and outlook toward the world are forming. In class we will discuss:

    • What is socialization, how to go about it, and how to give our dogs a choice in their day-to-day life

    • Body language and what to look for

    • Preventing resource guarding and how to handle scary things

    • The importance of making sure your puppy is able to be alone at times

    • Handling for the vets or groomers

  • Did you know that puppies who are not socialized, or not socialized properly, tend to grow up into fearful and even aggressive adults? It's true!

Our trainers use progressive training methods - we adhere to force-free and fear-free training that will transform your dog into a great family member. We will help your boisterous puppy become a polite pup. Your puppy can join class as young as 8 weeks of age. So, what are you waiting for?

Specialty Classes

  • Does your dog tend to react whenever you are out on a walk? Do you have a dog who loves to bark at all who dare to pass by your house? Then our Reactive Dog Program classes are exactly what you need! Our excellent trainers will teach you how to both manage your dog in these stressful situations as well as train your dog to instead offer an appropriate behavior.

Techniques such as focus and walking past reactive triggers without barking will make walks enjoyable once again! Many dogs tend to react out of fear, anxiety, or over-excitement, so our trainers will work with you over eight weeks, rather than five weeks, so you and your dog are sure to make progress.

  • Does your dog have what it takes to be a therapy dog? Not only do therapy dogs need to have good manners, but they must also be friendly, even-tempered, and gentle in nature. Therapy dogs need to be confident and comfortable when meeting new people and reliable in all kinds of environments.

If that sounds like your dog's personality, consider joining our Therapy Dog Prep class and combine your passion for helping people and being with your furry best friend! We will assist you in the journey from puppy to therapy dog team. The class will help prepare your dog to visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, libraries, and more to bring comfort to others. Not sure if your dog has what it takes to make a good therapy dog? Please contact us to discuss.

  • The CGC (Canine Good Citizen) Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The tagline of the CGC program is, “Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs,” and that is what CGC is all about. This class will cover the 10 behaviors needed to pass the CGC evaluation. Evaluations are given throughout the year at our facility. Dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test can earn a certificate and the official AKC CGC title.

The CGC program offers many practical advantages. The CGC award is a prerequisite for many therapy dog groups. Some homeowner’s insurance companies encourage CGC testing, and an increasing number of apartments and condos require that resident dogs pass the CGC test.

Click for more information about the CGC.

  • From loose leash walking to vet visits and everything in-between, our Life Skills Program gives you an opportunity to focus in on a key life skill that your dog needs extra tutoring in, and having the support from working in a class can set you both up for success.

  • Is your dog nervous at the vet or groomer? Do they have trouble with nail trims or ear cleanings? We will show you how to work through these situations in a calm and understanding manner at your dog’s own pace.
